Chapter 34

One obnoxious trucker had been riding Lynette’s bumper for the past two miles. At this rate, she could’ve walked to the airport faster than this. She concluded that there must’ve been an accident somewhere down the road that she couldn’t see, because there was no way a Monday evening should have this much backup.

Through the rear view mirror, Lynette could see Jada squinting down at her text book. Neither of the girls had spoken much since she’d picked them up. Jada had complained about the “tons of homework” she’d needed to finish before she got home so she wouldn’t miss any episodes of tonight’s reality show line-up.

Carmen on the other hand, couldn’t hold a decent conversation with a human being because she had the ear buds of her iPod stuffed in her ears.

“You should probably put on your glasses, Jada,” Lynette said.

“I forgot them at home,” she said.

“You didn’t lose them, did you?”

Jada smacked her lips. “Ma. As much as I hate those things, I know I can’t see my work without them. Plus, I don’t plan on paying for another pair out of my savings. One time was enough for me. That’s why I wish I could get some contacts.”

“When you’re sixteen.”

“Why is that always the magical number for everything? When I turn sixteen, I bet you’ll say when I’m eighteen, and when I’m eighteen, twenty-one. I’ll be a little old lady still waiting for my contacts. I’ll probably be blind by then.” Jada turned in her lips and smacked them together like she was missing two rows of teeth. They shared a laugh.

“For one thing, that’s not going to happen because I plan on you being out of my house by the time you’re twenty-one,” Lynette said. “I’ll give you time to graduate from college at least.”

“You just want us out so you can be free and do what you want. Maybe you’ll find a man and run off and get married in Hawaii or somewhere.”

“Now that’s a thought,” Lynette said, although she’d rather it be Italy than Hawaii. She’d been listening to her Italian audio tutorial CDs during the ride until the girls begged her to turn them off.

Jada was doing a better job at daydreaming than she was doing at finishing her homework.“And when you get ready to fly off with your fiancé, Daddy will be piloting the plane,” Jada said.“And when the plane lands he’ll get off and come running after you and fall on his knees and beg you to come back to him. But your new man will be begging you, too. Now that would be funny.”

Lynette pushed Jada to go further with her story. This could prove to be interesting.

“And what about Ms. Sheila?”

“What about her? Daddy could write her some kind of Dear John letter and leave it on her door. She’d probably do all of that mushy crying and stuff, but she’d get over it soon. And find her another man,” Jada said.

She sounded so convincing, Lynette thought.

The rush-hour traffic finally broke free, but Lynette never saw the remains of an accident as she expected.
